About GeneBlocks©

Why Genetics Boardgame?

Genetics is the core to understand human beings and our surrounding, yet it is not a favourite choice among students. We believed that learning Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) should be fun and engaging and can happen anywhere, anytime. Technology should not be the limitation in learning and hence we choose to design a board game. We hope the spirit of innovation and teamwork in this project can inspire others to do the same.

Our Story

It's now or never!

How we started?

Jasmine, Fadhli and Shaun, the three very different individuals from three different departments within the university but with one common goal, to make learning fun. We started from scratch; sourcing for grants, reading literature on gamification, playing games with students (yes, we do), sourcing for illustrator (our talented student!), printer (3D as well) and a lot of new adventures along the way. Needless to say, the rest are history. GeneBlocks open door of opportunities for us and we hope to contribute to the marginalized society in the future.

Our Milestones:

  • 28th International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2017) Silver Medal (Education Category)

  • 2017 International Conference and Exposition on Inventions by Institutions of Higher Learning (PECIPTA 2017) Silver Medal (Education Category)

  • 5th International Educational Games Competition 2017, FH JOANNEUM University of Applied Sciences, Graz, Austria, Finalist (Non-Digital Game)

  • Top Projects in Monash University Malaysia, MUM 20th Anniversary: Trailblazing Research @ Monash University Malaysia 2019

  • Invited guest lecturer to National Taiwan Normal University & Taipei University (Taiwan) to lecture on gamification and teaching STEM using games.

  • Presented papers on gamification in United States, Austria, Japan, Taiwan and Australia

  • Received “Innovation Grants” from Monash University Malaysia and Monash University Australia
